Gifts: Given

By Frank

Although I’m still hacking and coughing, I guess I shouldn’t put off recounting Xmas 2007 for y’all. I went to the doctor today and was told it was just a cold that was holding on. Because it has lasted for over 2 weeks they put me on antibiotics and gave me some cough syrup with codeine (Did you know you can get it without a prescription in Canada?!) . Hopefully this will help me fully recuperate. I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired! ;)

So, for today, let’s start with the gifts I gave since it’s better to give than to receive (and really, I do prefer being the gift giver rather than the recipient). I’ll letcha all know the gifts I got in tomorrow’s post.

      • I made four or five sets of embroidered napkins for many of our friends. Unfortunately, I didn’t take pictures of any of them. I’ll try to get some shots as I see our friends.
      • I made a set of place mats and napkins in a kind of Provence blue and yellow. Nope, no pictures of those either. (Hey, I just realized I could totally make up all kinds of fun things I made and there’d be no proof to contradict me! I also realized this is probably the leading contender for The World’s Most Boring Blog Entry Award.)
      • I made three pairs of jammies for the Little Princesses in my life. AND! I have photos! Here is Makende with her jammies.

As soon as she opened them she had to put them on, right over her clothes. And she wouldn’t let anyone take them off.

        • I also made a little book to match her jammies.

(There are more photos in my Flickr.)
Of course the first thing she wanted was to have it read to her. A. HUNDRED. TIMES. I was chanting, “Five little monkeys jumping on the bed. One fell off and bumped his head. Mama called the doctor and the doctor said, ‘That’s what you get for jumping on the bed!’” in my sleep!
            Makende and Tonton Frank
(But it was worth it to get to snuggle with her!)
            • Ana and Fifi got the same pajamas in a slightly different print. When Fifi was opening hers, she was like, “What’s dat?”

Ana apparently figured it out more quickly and her face spontaneously lit up.

(If only everyone reacted like that to handmade gifts!)
            • I started making a Snowman Wall quilt for my pal Joansy. Unfortunately a confluence of events (stupid mistakes and illness being the major ones) kept me from finishing it. So she got a gift certificate to a yarn shop in her neck of the woods tundra. I can’t post a pic because she reads my blog. And it would be a small photo!
            • I made two aprons for Mamie Catherine (Marguerite’s Mom) and Mamie Emilie (Marguerite’s Aunt). Yah, um, no photos of them with their aprons, but I do have photo of me in their aprons!
            Arpon 1
            Apron 2
            • I was commissioned (I’ve always wanted to say that!) to make an apron for my pal Vane’s boyfriend’s mom who is visiting from, well, I don’t remember exactly where, but I think it was either Central or South America. Anyway, she picked out the fabric and this is what I came up with.
            Double Sided Apron
            It’s reversible!

I was quite proud of that one.
            • And speaking of Vane (and if your name is Vanesa and you’re reading this before you open it in real life despite my phone call warning you not to read my blog, SHAME ON YOU VANESA!), this is what I made for her. It’s the Better Shopper bag from Amy Butler using two of her (Amy Butler’s, not Vane’s) prints.
            Betty Shopper
Isn’t it lovely?! If I weren’t so afraid of looking so much more like a flaming homosexual, I’d keep the bag for myself.
            Betty Shopper
A close-up of the handles. You can’t really see it, but they were slid through brass grommets. My first time doing grommets. And I have to say, fun, easy, and a very nice touch.
            Betty Shopper Inside
The inside of the bag, also an Amy Butler print.

This one shows the inside pockets, of which there are two on either side.
            Betty Shopper
And finally, a shot to show how skinny the bag is (and how poorly lined up the pattern is!).
            Amy Butler Betty Shopper
And a slightly blurry shot showing the size of the bag (and me looking slightly flamboyant, albeit well accessorized!).
I think that is it. Well, that’s all of the gifts I got done in time for Christmas. I’m still working on a couple of gifts for friends we don’t see that often.
Tomorrow I’ll show you what I got for Christmas!

Hi Frank, Just found your blog from that sewing list. YOU ROCK B*I*G Time!!!
A man who sews, awesome. I bookmarked your blog and I’ll read everyday.

            2. Rachel Says:

They’re all lovely. The sock monkey print is delightful and the reversible apron rocks. But my hands-down favorite is the Amy Butler bag. Awesome. Is that pattern available online? Not that *I* have the skillz to pull that off, but I have a lovely delightful and incredibly talented sister who does. I plan to tell her just how lovely and delightful she is when I gently suggest she make me one. :)

Beautiful gifts Frank…forget the Target Gift Cards!
Nothing beats Makende’s PROUD, PROUD face in the first picture. Well, Ana’s happy face is pretty equal in the cute factor too. You sure light up those little girls’ lives! I can just see you patiently reading the monkey book over, and over…and over. You have risen yourself to sainthood on that one. I never cared much for the repetitive songs or stories like The Ants Go Marching or 99 Bottles Of Beer On The Wall, but like you said, if it’s to entertain a cutie pie like Makende, it’s worth it.

            4. Kathy Says:

Frank, in all of your holiday pictures all of your friends and guests and special loved ones look so genuinely happy! Actually, in all of your pictures any time your people look genuinely happy.

            5. Critterknit Says:

Wow, Frank! I’m knocked out by all your handmade gifts! Especially the bag. Any chance, once you’re fully healthy again and such, you’d consider a commission for one of those? Given the size, I’m wondering if it would be one heck of a briefcase-style bag. Any idea what the price range might be?

            6. Carrie Says:

You’re making the rest of us look bad, Frank my dear. Couldn’t you just screw up ONE little project so I feel better? ;-)
And also, SWOON over that blue/purple/silver batik on the first apron. I don’t usually do aprons, but if it looked like that, I’d wear it every day. To sleep, to work, to the movies… (I’d be like Makende with her new jammies.)

            7. MX Says:

That BAG! THAT BAG!! You could go into business!

            8. Sam Says:

              The bag is absolutely beautiful!

I like all the items you’ve shown here. You know, I love visiting blogs like yours. They are so inspiring. Cute kids too. They look very pleased with their gifts! Thanks for posting. I love blog hopping!

Finally – a post that doesn’t make me hungry!!!! Of course, now I want to sew like a fiend (nope, don’t have that ability), but I think that will pass. Beautiful job on everything, but I’m so going to stalk Vanesa and steal that bag.

            11. Shelly Says:

              You amaze me..thats all I’m sayin….

            12. Rachel Says:

Frank! It’s Rachel from Wisconsin… from Carroll… remember?? I can’t believe I found you out in cyberspace! I love your blog, I think I still have the t-shirt you made me one year for Christmas. I see you’ve graduated to much bigger and better things. As someone who bakes and sews I give you big kudos for your fabulous wares. And I love the handmade Xmas! A few years ago I made Xmas stockings for all my co-workers and they were a big hit. Handmade is truly the best. I’m so glad you are doing so well out in sunny CA – it’s 20 degrees here! :)

              All your gifts are wonderful.

            14. Emily Says:

Great gifts, I love the pjs, and your little girl is beautiful! I feel your pain on the illness issue – I have had Strep throat 3 times in the last three months (prime gift making time!!!) and my son just got croup right after Christmas. I just took my girl scout troop on an overnighter and now I feel like I’m coming down with something else again!!! UGH! Anyway, Great blog! Em

            15. Heather Says:

Frank, would you mind sharing how you made your reversible apron? The binding baffles me, unless of course, you used both fabrics at once to make the binding!

That BAG!!!! I envy Vanessa having a friend like you.

            16. Princess Says:

              I. WANT. THAT. BAG.

            17. kristineho Says:

How do I get on the list to get one of these? I’m mean since I have the wallet and tote to match! You are amazingly talented Frank!!
