Vintage Valentine
Vanesa commissioned me (there I am using that phrase again!) to make a baby shower cake for a friend of hers who is due near Valentine’s Day. The shower’s theme is Vintage Valentine. This is what I came up with.
The “lace” around the cake is gum paste and is made by rolling out the gum paste very thin and using a cutter to give the different edge designs. The lace at the top is three layers and I used three different cutters and then topped with extruded gum paste rope. The small holes are made using a toothpick and are supposed to make it look more like lace. After it was applied I placed edible pearls onto the cake. The lace at the bottom is only one layer from which I cut the heart shapes and then applied them to the cake above the lace, then again applied the edible pearls.
The baby is hand-molded using sugar paste and the details are painted on with edible marker. The quilt is also made from sugar paste and embellished with heart motifs. The letters were made using “Tappits” letter cutters.
Speaking of Vane, she loved her bag (which actually makes me a bit sad because I was getting used to having it hanging around!). Oh well, I know she’ll love it and flaunt use it.

I must come up with a reason — other than I’m greedy — to “commission” a cake from you.

Frank,
That cake is simply amazing! So very beautiful. I love all the gifts you made for your lucky friends and family.
This year I am going to try to be more creative and use my abilities to craft. Thanks for being such a great inspiration.

The lace on that cake is perfect!!!! Very, very cool, the whole thing. Going along with the vintage theme, the baby reminds me of one of the Cambell’s Soup Kids as an infant…cute. Oh, and I hate to tell you this, but the bag definitely looks better on Vane than on you!
Hopefully you’ll be making a cake like that for yourself pretty soon.

Frank, love, that is one helluva cake. Good grief I wish you were close enough that *I* could commission things from you.
I have one question though. “gum paste” doesn’t sound terribly appetizing. What does it taste like?

Frank, your work amazes me. I’m going to have to make up a holiday to commission another cake from you. And where did you get that fabric for the bag??? LOVE IT! xo

Frank…this cake is beyond belief. What I love about it (aside from its beauty and yumminess) is how it looks like a cake from a movie-theater cartoon from the 1930s-all smooth and rounded and the most scrumptious pink and red colors.
Funny how one’s mind works. Anyway, yours works just FINE!

That cake ROCKS just like you

Frank,
I think that is one of your best cakes yet…I just absolutely love the baby lying under the quilt…completely adorable. The mother-to-be will be in tears I’m sure.
Talk soon!

I just got back from the baby shower and your beautiful cake was ABSOLUTELY A HIT (as I knew it would be)!!! As I walked past the tables (breaking a sweat b/c it weighed a ton) in the restaurant to get to the baby shower area people stopped eating to look at it and were dumbfounded. Once I arrived to the designated area the women began clapping and standing up cheering (no joke!!!). The Mommy-To-Be was speechless and suggested that we didn’t eat it b/c it was just too beautiful to ruin
Of course, I was bombarded by questions and everyone was asking if I had your card. I’m such a dummy I forgot to ask you for these. You have at least 5 or 6 future clients from this event alone!
I can’t thank you enough for all your hard work Frank and for making my friend’s baby shower so memorable!!! Despite being so sick and being on vacation you made that beautiful apron for Franco’s mom, my extraordinary travel bag, and this fantastic cake. You are a TRUE FRIEND and I feel SO BLESSED to have you in my life

DEAR GOD, call out the Awards Committee, that cake deserves a First Prize! How do you do all that detail work without leaving fingerprints all over the cake? I tried using some pink fondant to cover a birthday cake I made for my daughter a few weeks ago and it ended up looking like something out of a Tim Burton movie. But at least I made it from scratch!

hey Frank,
Love the cake…it’s simply beautiful! And I really want one of those bags! Love it!

That’s a great cake! I love it. My 5 year old daughter saw it and said, “Is that one of the cake man’s cakes? I just love his cakes. They’re so cool and funny.”
Thanks for sharing!!!

Holy crap, that is amazing. I’m with Sappmama - I must come up with an excuse to commission you (sounds dirty, don’t it?!) Your cake makes my ovaries hurt. But in a good way.
