Some Firsts (and One Second!)

Sorry for the inadvertent blog hiatus. I had every good intention of blogging last week and even got to work early to do so. And then Big Brother closed down the firewall/security thingie. ALL.WEEK.LONG! We couldn’t access anything, including, GASP! email!

(Anyone who knows me will know how much that hurt. Thankfully, I have an iPhone! So I could at least read my mail. But I pretty much hate typing for long on it, so I was worse than usual about replying!)

(I have no idea how that intro fits into the title, but I was so tickled with how the rest of what I want to say fit in, that I kept the title. Oh, I know! That is the first time I couldn’t access my email from work! ;) )

The second first was this:

First Tooth!

Oliver got his first tooth! (I know, I know, you can barely see it, but if you run your immaculately clean finger along his gum, you’ll feel it!)

And then on Friday, Oliver got sick for the first time! UGH! It started with a low-grade fever the day before and by Sunday it was up around 102 (102 point 4 to be exact!). Skeered the BEJESUS out of Daddy!

And of course the medical establishment didn’t seem to see it nearly as horrifying as I did.

Anyway, poor little guy was getting doses of Tylenol every four hours to keep the fever at a moderate level (I know, I know, fevers are good. And I let it go until it hit 102.4. Then my blood pressure couldn’t take it any longer and I caved. And honestly, I don’t think he liked it much either!).

Last night he was so congested (even with the Baby Vicks and the vaporizer with that inhalant stuff in it!) he couldn’t sleep laying down, so I sat in the rocking chair with him on my chest (I wish I could say that was a first, but that’s happened more times than I care to remember!). It was sweet for 5 minutes… But at least he got some sleep.

This morning I took him in to Urgent Care (I still don’t remember seeing any urgency while I was there, but maybe it’s me!) only to be told: he has his first cold. Quickly followed with, “Be prepared for it to happen 4 or 5 times a year for the next few years. (That made me check the warranty to see if it’s too late to return him for a full refund. It is.)”

I thought he was feeling a bit better today, but then tonight he ended up having another mild fever. Poor little guy!

Oliver got his first set of Made For Him clothes!

Thank You Auntie Kathy!

Believe it or not, it’s from an online friend whom I have never met!  She does wonderful work, go check out her items!  (Thanks Kathy!)

Um, another first: I made a set of bumper pads for his crib!

New Bumper Pads

I found this luscious chenille and couldn’t resist making them for him (especially since he’s been getting his arm in between the bars and then crying when he tries to flip over but can’t). I just kind of winged it and this is what I came up with. Given the prices I’ve seen bumper pads selling for on Etsy, I may end up adding them to Oliver’s Twist!

And the second? Oliver’s first tooth is getting a friend. It hasn’t poked through yet, but I would imagine it will be here by tomorrow!

I see it!!! I see it!!!!! Sure enough….there’s a new tooth!!!

I hope he feels better soon. I hate it when little ones are sick.

Those bumper pads are great Frank…beautiful….and Oliver’s as cute as ever!

So glad to see you are back to blogging. You were missed. Very exciting about little man’s first tooth! Hope he is feeling better soon

Frank, Sickness always seem to get worst at nighttime, so don’t worry too much about it if all else is ok, it’s probably just from the teething….it could be worst, trust me.

I have a similar pic of one of mine with a first tooth too!

  4. Anne-Marie Says:

Sweet! Good to see you again after all this time!

What Heather said! I’m not sure if my kids are sicker at night or I’m more panicky when the sun goes down. Though I’ve been told my numerous “official” sources that teething does not cause a fever, I don’t believe it for a minute. My kids ALWAYS had a fever when they were getting a tooth. I hope Oliver’s better soon, soon. He’ll be so cute with a two-tooth grin. Is it possible for him to be cuter?!

    Awww, sweet little toofer!

So sorry Oliver has a cold! I hope he doesn’t get an ear infection too! I love his little tooth poking through - and those clothes are adorable! I hope everyone is able to get back to their ‘normal’ programing soon!

Yes, they say teething doesn’t cause a fever, but raising two kids, seeing them get a fever each and every time they got two or three teeth close together, they DO get fevers when teething. My Mom said that right before getting a new tooth, I would get laryngitis and couldn’t talk for two days. Then when I could squeak a bit, the tooth was coming through. that’s a lot of laryngitis when teething. Coincidence? I think not.

I’m sure he’s better today. Life will get back on track until the next one. And as for holding him on your chest all night, hoping he’ll sleep, I remember the sun coming up many times in that situation. See? You have to go through this kind of stuff to earn your title, Daddy.

Hope Oliver is feeling better. Love his new tooth! & Clothes! & Bumpers! It doesn’t even sound like you had time to blog with all that teething and such going on. His new pants are smashing!

I recommend ibuprofen. It only takes 30 mins to be effective (vs. 1 hr for Tylenol) and lasts 6 hours (vs 4). I know that you know what a big difference 4 and 6 hours of sleep means for you both ;). Those vibrating baby bouncers work great for babies with stuffy noses. Will help you catch a couple hours of sleep if you’re lucky.

Expect to be using all of your sick days on colds. It’s just the way it goes until they are 5 or so. Be glad when you don’t catch it and expect to be sick yourself (your partner too) a lot. Frustrating, but as you’re seeing so worth it :).

Love the bumpers and the outfit is too cute.

Yeah, what they all said. My DS always had a fever and cold when he was teething.

You can try putting phone books under one end of his mattress to elevate his head. Or under the legs of one end of the crib.

Do you have saline drops and the nose-sucky thing? It’s easy to administer the saline drops if you do it while he is sucking on a bottle. Just a drop or two in each nostril (just hold the bottle in his nostril and let the saline drip out, DON’T SQUEEZE THE BOTTLE!!!), then use the sucky thing to clear each side.

His couture cloths are adorable, and look how happy he is!

Oh this brings back so many memories! I spent one full week holding my son at about age 6 months due to a fever and congestion that just wouldn’t quit. It was awful. It’s true, though, they get sick a lot when they’re little, and it’s never easy. Just one of the awful parts of being a parent.

Times like this really make you appreciate the good days!

Oliver just keeps getting cuter and cuter :)
Love the new outfit. Makes me wish I could sew!
Congrats on the first tooth and it sounds like you did great with his first cold. Miss you.

FRANK! YOUR BABY IS DELICIOUS!!!! How in the world do you keep from smooching those cheeks right off his face?!

Love the new outfit, the bumper pads, and the toothy. Try Motrin for the fever, too. Sometimes I think it works a little better than Tylenol.

Fevers always always beguile me! Hate hate them with a passion.

Oliver is just adorable, and I love his handmades
