Getting Acclimated

By Frank

Golly it’s been a rough couple of days! I don’t remember the jet lag being this bad the last time we came. But then again, I didn’t have a child who was waking up at 1 am and tossing and turning and digging his (SHARP!) little toe nails into my back until 5 am! So as rough as I’m having it, I feel worse for Oliver who hasn’t a clue why he feels so strange. Nor who all these new people are who are speaking a different language (he normally only hears it from Papa and occasionally a friend a two, but not from EVERYONE!)!  Another small problem is the daylight; it get light out WAY early (like around 5am and we’re used to 7ish) and stays light until WAY late (like 10 and we’re used to 9ish) so that’s messing with our systems as well.  I just got back from a walk (it’s 10ish) and until a bit ago it was perfectly light outside!

We’re trying to get him back onto a schedule to help him acclimate to the change. But it’s probably rough because there are times when I’m sure his body is telling him he’s supposed to be asleep and he’s awake (I know my body is screaming at me, so I’m sure his is as well).

Despite the difficulty, we’re having a great time. We’re not doing much, mostly preparations for a birthday celebration our friends/hosts are having on Sunday.

We have been trying to get out and get to the local parks for Oliver’s sake. As you can see, he’s usually raring to go!

Allons-y (Let's GO!)

After a few errands this afternoon (IKEA is almost exactly the same in France as in the US, except maybe a teensy bit smaller!), we went to a pizzeria where the kids’ pizza came in the shape of a heart!

Now THAT'S a pizza!

Unfortunately I didn’t pack nearly enough warm clothing for the very cool temperatures (they were having a heat wave when we left!).  But we’ll adjust (and wash frequently or take advantage of the sales everyone seems to be having due to the “global depression”)!

So glad you made it safe and sound! Looks like you are having a good time, despite the jet lag. Hopefully everyone will feel better in a few days. Keep having fun :)

Oliver is getting so big! I am amazed at how tall he looks. I would swear he’s nearly 3.

ok, that looks yummy. Just keep doing what you are doing and the body-clock adjustments will come. My husband, who traveled quite a bit for work, used to say eat at 7:00, 12:00 and 6:00 – wake up at 6:00 go to bed at 11:00 and everything aligns. And yes, he did this without a sharp-toed toddler!

    That last picture’s great!

He looks like he’s thinking, “What the hell? Pizzas are round where I come from!”

I have a German friend whose children only spoke English (English between parents and children too). Her parents came from Germany for a month. And her 18 month old son was fluent in German when they left one month later. Children sense which language everyone is speaking and begin to dialog in both. Children are the only ones who do not have to mentally switch languages. So when you guys get home, you need to continue with the French, consciously to continue his language skills. when he is an adult, he will be fluent in both. My friend continued with the German on Sundays. The rest of the week was English. Both of her children continue bilingual, both writing and speaking. this is a good chance for this.

He looks so funny, looking at the camera as if to say, “What the heck is this on my plate?” lol He looks so grown up.

Frank, I see you are enjoying your vacation…..lol…….one tip to get Oliver over the jetlag quickly…….give him something to eat. Oliver is waking up because his body is telling him he is hungry and it should be daytime. Feed him, try it. It worked everytime when I travelled with mine when they were younger. I’d feed them, get them back to bed and later we’d all get up again at a more ‘acceptable’ hour and go the entire day. Soon jetlag was history. Tip compliments of my Aunt on our trips to Canada.
